My wedding to Gunnar Spencer was originally scheduled for a month from now, and invitations from both families had already been sent out.
However, the Spencer family's invitations didn't have my name on them.
Instead, they had the name of Gunnar Spencer's first love, Poppy Morris!
Our entire family stood around the invitation, completely stunned.
Who would've thought that barely a month after Elderly Mr. Spencer's passing, the Spencers would go ahead and change the bride?
My father, furious, smashed the antique bowl in his hand on the ground, cursing: "Has the Spencer family gone mad?! We've already sent out the invitations! How dare they break off the engagement at this point?!"
My older brother added, "It's not even breaking off the engagement. They didn't notify us at all-they just swapped the bride without a word!"
The Kaur family has never been humiliated like this before, and my father and brother's rage was practically shaking the roof.
But I didn't care about it in the slightest.
After all, marriage is just marriage. If one isn't obedient, I'll just find another one who is.
I turned to look at my mom, hoping she would calm these two men down. Getting this worked up is bad for their health.
That's when I noticed my mom on the phone, her expression looking rather grim.
I leaned in and whispered, "Mom, what are you doing?"
She gave me a strange look and turned on the speaker.
My younger brother's cold voice came from the other side: "First, find out what's going on. If someone below messed up and we misunderstand the Spencer family, that wouldn't be good."
With just one sentence, my furious father and brother were instantly pacified.
My mom nodded, then pulled out the marriage contract personally written by Elderly Mr. Spencer.
Back then, my father had saved Elderly Mr. Spencer's life.
In gratitude, Elderly Mr. Spencer arranged for his youngest grandson, Gunnar Spencer, to marry me.
This marriage contract was the proof.
My mom stuffed the contract into her pocket and took me with her to the Spencer family's old estate.
It had only been a month since Elderly Mr. Spencer's death, but the once modest mansion had already turned lavish.
The current Mrs. Spencer, who used to be Elderly Mr. Spencer's eldest daughter-in-law and is Gunnar Spencer's mother, made us wait for over an hour before she leisurely walked in.
"The old patriarch just passed away, and there's so much going on in the family. I've been busy running around, I hope you don't mind the wait, Mrs. Kaur," she said, dripping in jewelry. Without even acknowledging my mom's polite greeting, she walked straight to the main seat and sat down.
As she glanced at my mother and me, a hint of smugness flashed across her meticulously made-up face.
If Elderly Mr. Spencer were still alive, she wouldn't dare to show such arrogance.
But my mom wasn't one to put up with her behavior. She sat directly across from Mrs. Spencer.
"I came today to ask-what's going on with this wedding invitation?"
Mrs. Spencer glanced at the invitation my mom threw on the table, and a glint flashed in her eyes. "Oh, I forgot to inform you earlier. Miss Morris is Gunnar's true love, and now that she's returned from abroad, Gunnar couldn't wait to marry her."
We had initially thought the name on the invitation was a mistake.
But from Mrs. Spencer's tone, it was clear they had knowingly replaced the bride without telling us.
My mother was instantly furious and slammed her hand on the table. "I don't care who she is! Next month is supposed to be Alicia and Gunnar Spencer's wedding. You swapped the bride without saying a word-don't you think that's a bit much?!"
"Not informing you in advance was indeed Gunnar's mistake," Mrs. Spencer sighed. "But Gunnar and Alicia's engagement was just Elderly Mr. Spencer's wishful thinking. Now that he's gone, it no longer counts."
"What a convenient 'wishful thinking'!" My mom paused mid-way as she reached for the marriage contract, letting out a cold laugh. "If it was just wishful thinking, then why arrange the marriage? The invitations have already been sent, and now we've become a complete joke!"
What the Spencer family had done was a direct insult to the Kaur family!
They had completely trampled on our dignity!
